India declared Open Defecation Free (rural) in October 2019. Independent verification by UNICEF and WHO found significant on-ground improvement, though usage and maintenance rates in some states lag construction numbers. SBM Phase 2 focuses on sustainability and solid/liquid waste management. Urban SBM targets households without sanitation access.
