Vijay (stage name), one of Tamil cinema's biggest stars, founded TVK in 2024 and led it to a surprise majority in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, ending DMK's tenure. His campaign centred on corruption-free governance, youth employment, and social justice. He has no prior legislative or administrative experience. Tamil Nadu has a strong tradition of film-star politicians (MGR, Jayalalithaa), and TVK won on a wave of personal popularity. He has not aligned with either NDA or INDIA bloc at the national level.
