Dhami became CM in July 2021, replacing Tirath Singh Rawat. Unusually, he lost his own Khatima constituency in the 2022 Uttarakhand elections but was retained as CM after BJP won 47 of 70 seats. He won a by-election to stay in the assembly. His tenure has focused on Uniform Civil Code implementation (Uttarakhand became the first state to formally notify a UCC), tourism recovery post-COVID, and disaster-resilience infrastructure after repeated cloudbursts and landslides in the Himalayan state.
