Tamang (popularly known as 'P.S. Golay') ended the 25-year dominance of Pawan Chamling's Sikkim Democratic Front when SKM swept the 2019 Sikkim elections. He was re-elected in June 2024 with SKM winning 31 of 32 seats — the most decisive mandate in Sikkim history. Despite being convicted in an embezzlement case in 2016 (serving his sentence), he contested and won elections after the Supreme Court ruled that a conviction at the time of candidacy, not during incarceration, bars from contesting. SKM supports NDA at the national level.
