Vijayan led the LDF to a historic second consecutive term in the 2021 Kerala elections — the first Left government to do so in the state's history. He is known for firm administrative control and oversight of state agencies. Kerala has high human development indices (literacy 94%, IMR among the lowest) but faces challenges around fiscal deficit, unemployment among educated youth, and an ageing population. He has also faced criticism over the gold-smuggling case involving his former principal secretary's wife.
