Yadav was a surprise choice as CM when BJP won 163 of 230 seats in the December 2023 MP elections under former CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan's campaign. Senior leaders Shivraj Chouhan, Narottam Mishra, and Kailash Vijayvargiya were expected to be considered, but BJP chose Yadav — an OBC from Ujjain with a clean image. He holds a doctorate and is one of the more academically qualified CMs. Madhya Pradesh is often cited for improvement in farmer income and road connectivity under BJP rule.
