Majhi's appointment as CM ended Naveen Patnaik's 24-year dominance of Odisha politics. BJD, Patnaik's party, lost the June 2024 Odisha elections after BJP won 78 of 147 seats — a surprise result attributed partly to voter fatigue and discontent with BJD's handling of local issues. Majhi is from the Mayurbhanj district and the Scheduled Tribe community — Odisha has 22.8% ST population. He faces the challenge of managing Odisha's significant mineral revenues while improving social indicators.
