Mamata Banerjee ended 34 years of Left Front rule in West Bengal in 2011, winning three consecutive terms as CM. AITC swept 213 of 294 seats in the May 2021 elections, defeating BJP's high-profile challenge. She has been a fierce critic of the central government and a key opposition figure. West Bengal has significant challenges around law-and-order (particularly political violence), fiscal health, and industrial investment attraction.
