Sarma served as a senior minister under Congress CM Tarun Gogoi for 15 years before joining BJP in 2015. He is widely credited as the key organiser of BJP's northeast expansion. As CM he has overseen eviction drives against encroachers in forest land, and tightened enforcement of the NRC in Assam. Critics have raised concerns about targeting of minorities and media freedom.
