Sharma was a surprise choice for CM — a first-time MP who had never held ministerial office. BJP won 115 of 199 contested seats in the December 2023 Rajasthan elections, defeating the Congress government of Ashok Gehlot. The state follows a consistent anti-incumbency pattern — Congress and BJP have alternated in power each election since 1993. He is from the Brahmin community; Rajasthan has large Jat and Gujjar constituencies whose satisfaction with BJP remains a key political variable.
