Context & Governance Notes

AAP won a historic 92 of 117 seats in the 2022 Punjab elections, converting the state from a Congress-Akali duopoly. Mann, a popular comedian and AAP MP, was chosen as CM. His government has prioritised free electricity (300 units/month), school and mohalla clinic upgrades, and anti-narcotics drives. Punjab faces serious structural challenges: a ₹3.3 lakh crore debt burden, farm stubble burning, a drug crisis, and gang violence. In 2023 AAP lost the Sangrur by-election and all 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab in 2024.
