Context & shortfalls

Share of people living below the World Bank's international poverty line of $3.00 a day (2021 PPP). In June 2025 the World Bank raised the line from $2.15 (2017 PPP) and revised the whole series, so older published figures are not comparable. India has no estimates between 2011 and 2022: the 2017-18 consumption survey was withheld, and the 2022 onward figures rest on the new Household Consumption Expenditure Surveys, whose changed methodology makes comparison with 2011 imperfect. Much of the fall predates 2014 (46.4% in 2004 to 27.1% in 2011). At the higher $4.20-a-day line for lower-middle-income countries, 16.1% of Indians were still poor in 2023, so many people remain only just above extreme poverty. Auto-refreshed weekly from the World Bank API; World Bank estimates are revised when new surveys or PPP data arrive.
